The gentle afternoon breezes are knocking these apples to the ground. As you can plainly see, the trees have not been sprayed so the apples are pretty much worm infested. We don't eat them, but the deer love 'em. Last week, Elenka spied 4 of them scampering about a big tree out back, jumping on each others' backs and jumping up trying to knock more off the branches. They seemed to be acting more like kittens than deer. Hunting season in Maine is fast approaching. As a matter of fact, Maine Moose Hunting season(by lottery permit only) opens today at sunrise. I'm not a hunter, but I do have many friends that partake each fall. My friend Jason has a moose permit for the first time ever and will be heading off to his camp in Washington county soon. He's pretty excited. He loves the hunt, but for him it's really all about camaraderie of being with his sons and best buddies for a week or so. I'm not going to start the pro/con hunting debate this morning. I'll end this with 'to each his own'. When you live in large rural state like Maine, I find it a pretty good rule to follow, hunting or otherwise.

Field Deer

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post today. Those apples may not be pretty but if peeled and sliced will make great pie and better yet apple butter. Cut out the bad spots and mash to make applesauce. Then cook in an uncovered kettle slowly over a low heat. Stir frequently until it gets thick and turns a dark brown. No sugar, no spices, just apple. Mmm-Mm.
ReplyDeleteThe erratic behavior of the deer may be the result of a few too many fermented apples. Bees and wasps will feed on rotting fermented fruit and become so intoxicated that they can't fly. They just roll around on the ground trying to harmonize Sweet Adeline.

How fantastic to have deer in the back yard, what a shot (oops! wrong word!!) what a fab image that would make, and it's good that the apples are not being wasted!!

ReplyDeleteThere is an apple tree outside of one of the windows at our little church. If we sit by that window during church services, we can watch the deer come and eat the apples... Not sure I listen to the sermon much when seeing that!!!! ha

I hope that you got some shots (just kidding) of those deer. Well, at least some photos of them with the apples. Look and see if there are any bees rolling around on the ground, too!

ReplyDeleteI think that rule applies most anywhere. I have a brother who is an avid elk hunter and another dove hunter in New Mexico.

ReplyDeleteI am with you, Birdman. I am not a hunter, but I do support hunting as a necessary way to thin the deer herd so that the ones that remain have a chance of being healthy. I just don't want to be the one firing the weapon.

ReplyDeleteWow, wormy apples to moose hunting - you're covering a big range of concepts here. I'm in the con column but then I'm a city boy. On the other hand, I've gone out quail hunting with my brothers-in-law and nephews in Kansas farmland many times on the day after Thanksgiving (and probably will this year). They carry shotguns, I carry a Canon. To each his own.
