Black Umbrella

... and a white sweater know what loneliness is all about as they wait out a sunny afternoon.

What pictures do you like to capture with your camera? I'm not a pretty picture kinda guy. I don't think most photographers would admit to this. What I set out to do is capture my world. Sometimes the photos that come together are of the 'big picture' variety, that make others say, "Hey, I know where that is." Lately though, I've been aiming my lens at small pieces of my day that I just seem to stumble over. Surprises abound. For example, in my photographer mind, this was not what I was aiming for with this umbrella and sweater. But arriving home and taking a second look at what I had in the camera, I smiled.
The contrast.
The shadows.
The umbrella.
This was what was there.

  1. I tend to photograph whatever appeals to me at the moment. It varies according to my moods. But I do love the play of sunshine and shadows.

  2. Sometimes something just grabs you and you take a picture. Sometimes you think it won't be any good. Sometimes you are surprised. There's a story here but the nice thing is you can make up your own. I think the white sweater belongs to a young lady who came in out of the rain. She's a brunette, with blonde streaks in her hair; wears Nike sneakers and runs when the weather is good.

  3. Sometimes things , like eyes, mind, camera, have their own lives and live it without asking us .and they often offer good surprises!

  4. Typically I photograph my outdoor environment. I think I need to work more on the people around me.

  5. I catch things that interest me visually or often mentally if they tell a story like this pic of yours.

  6. I agree with the lack of enthusiasm for pretty pictures. You see physical details better than I do. I'm a people street shooter. Not everyone is comfortable with that.

  7. I like to meet strangers, talk with them a bit, try to learn a bit about who they are, then take a portrait that illustrates the kind of person they are.

  8. The umbrella and sweater juxtaposed make a fine duet.

  9. I like those small things . . . those 'ordinary' elements that take on special significance when you lean in close . . .

  11. I like your meditation here. I like the idea of "aiming my lens at small pieces of my day."
