Kilt Time

"If you've got the legs, we've got the kilt."

I've had a poster hanging on my back wall for years sent to me by the Admissions Director of the College of Wooster in Ohio. There are a few colleges out the there with the mascot, 'the Fighting Scots' and even less high schools. At last count I found only three high schools, across this country, carrying this moniker. It sets us apart from the boring  lions, tigers, bears bulldogs and red storms etc. I think that is so very cool.
BE Pride!

Usually, if I promise something, I'm one who carries 'the threat' out. When I mentioned to Elenka, back about nine months or so ago that when I retired I was planning on wearing a kilt my last day, she shook her head and uttered these words, "Oh no you are NOT!" The line was delivered with vigor. J- at first thought that only embarrassment would be the end product. To say the least, they mellowed to the idea over time.
Yesterday...
The kilt was a hit!
The kids loved it.
My faculty loved it!
Even Elenka said when I left the house, "I must say, it looks better than I thought."
That was a seal of approval.
She can be pretty blunt.

btw This is a traditional Irish kilt.
I LOVE the sounds of a good pipe band too!

  3. Cool kilt, and a brave man to wear it . . . Your expression there reminds me of Sonny in Sonny & Cher . . .

  4. Congratulations. The kilt looks great. I've always had a fine time wearing kilts. It is completely appropriate to wear on your last day.

  6. I have to admit that's a good-looking kilt, but I'd be kilt before I'd wear it! :)

  7. You wore that kilt with great style because you know who you are and are comfortable with it. It looks great. I'm not surprised that you have been teaching, but did not expect middle school. 41 1/2 years is amazing.

By the by, I went to college at Edinboro (state school in Pa.) and I do believe they are called the Fighting Scots. Also have a good friend who lives near Aberdeen in Scotland and all the men in her family have kilts.

  8. Excellent shot! I've never been in a position where I was asked to wear one- the closest I came was wearing clan colours in a vest and tie as part of a wedding party.

  9. That's a brilliant way to celebrate a last day as a working stiff. Well done, and good for following through on it. I'm glad the kids loved it; they need to know there's more in life than lockstep conformity.

  12. Bravo! You know, there is a Celtic Music Festival in Belfast. This year July 18, 19, 20th. (easy to google, just put in Belfast MAINE so it will know it's not Belfast Ireland) I know there will be pipes! Come on up, y'all!
