Travelog #4

No, this is not a self-portrait of me wearing a pelican mask. Remember: things are not always as they appear. These birds look so goofy and awkward to me, while waiting for fishermen to throw castoffs their way. Yet see them in flight and they are maybe the most graceful of birds. I always know I'm in Florida when a squadron of these winged creatures pass overhead. Such an elegant bird trapped in an unseemly costume. This one was quite friendly too. Children were patting it on its head.
Me?
I passed.
That is a large mouth.
I'm happy watching them soar, overhead along the shore.

  1. They must be tamer in Florida. No self-respecting pelican in North Carolina would ever allow itself to be "petted". They're WILD pelicans in NC! :-)

  4. Would be a great profile photo for you! When in Charleston last winter, I loved watching these birds frolic and fly.

  8. This post made me smile. I totally agree about these birds. They just look a little goofy sitting but when they fly overhead they are the image of grace and beauty.

  10. Our pelican flocks arrived about two weeks ago just as some of the ice on our local lakes melted. They are Great White Pelicans, not the Brown Pelican, and they don't let people get near then at all unless they fly overhead. Beautiful birds that fish collectively. I posted a picture of them in flight a few days ago.

  13. Birdman, your photo of this brown pelican is very nice. Maybe you could substitute a pelican head for that brown bag? It must be getting dirty.
