Lumber House
In the middle of this world of big-box lumber supply houses, Rufus Deering Company is that 'little engine that could'. Since 1854, they have been dispensing lumber supplies and hardware out of the same location on Commercial Street. Now, I will have been working out of the same location, come February 2, 2013, for 40 years. There are some days where I have questioned my sanity and others where I have to just sit back in amazement at the accomplishment. I guess you could say I consider myself a well established firm at this point. And that ain't braggin'... much.

I love the old school lumber yards. We only have one in this area that comes close.
ReplyDeleteI have now spent 35 years in the natural gas gathering and processing business. I ask myself all the time how that came to be. I didn't set out to do it. But I still love it.
It is wonderful to note that some of us still have longevity in our chosen profession. I thought that teaching for 28 years (for me) was a great accomplishment, but 40 years!! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteI am glad some local businesses are thriving. Love the way the place seems to glow! :)
ReplyDeleteMore power to 'em. And congratulations to you.
ReplyDeleteIn a world where changing has become a moto, I like to see some shops, people and rocks staying at the same place...
ReplyDeleteyou are a rarity, for sure.
ReplyDeleteLongevity is something you don't see very much anymore. Congratulations to them and to you.
ReplyDeletethat is a super accomplishment in this day and time, for both you and the lumber house!
ReplyDeleteI would guess that this place survived by putting service above greed. It's wonderful too see such a business.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what you meant about yourself, but it seems to me that you are certainly established. I've never lived anywhere for 40 years (well, except the U.S.). :)
Glad to see that you are both prospering!
ReplyDeleteNice place, cool achievement. And blue sky. Can't remember the last time I saw it here. Are there still people called Rufus around, do you think?
ReplyDeleteSuper congratulations to both of you Little Engines that Could! (I've never seen this little building on Commercial...will go scouting...
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! That's truly an accomplishment, given the changes in the world of business over the last 40 years. Maybe it helps to have such a handsome, bright workplace to drive up to every day? And the scent of fresh-cut wood?
ReplyDeleteLongevity of anything is a great achievement! I am happy for you !
ReplyDeleteI like the longstanding local businesses. They are holdovers, but I do try to support them.
ReplyDelete40 years at one place? That is impressive. Congratulations (as of next February . . . let's not rush things).
Whoah, not many people today can say the same!
ReplyDeleteThat is wonderful. Local businesses are the best.
ReplyDeleteThe kind of place we would all rather do business. I just love a well-run place that caters to local customers and that you can depend on for advice and good service. Love the red against the blue sky in your shot. Very attractive place which also adds value to the community.

Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday, which reminds us to shop locally and support the small businesses in our area and our neighborhoods. Is that photo and post a coincidence or did you already know?
ReplyDeleteBises,
Genie
Good for you, not many have that kind of longevity.. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteForty years at the same place, and a good place--that's wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to visit there and sniff the nice smell of lumber.
