Theme Day: Fountains

Today, February 1, 2011 is Theme Day across the CDPB(citydailyphotoblog) community. Back in high school, there was a time when fountain pens were all the rage. One morning in English, while the class was off attempting some poetry, I was dealing with a balky pen tip. I had a new cartridge in, but the ink just wasn't coming out. I remedied the problem by flicking it repeatedly towards the desk in front of me. Oh, I got it flowing all right, all over the collar and jacket of the kid sitting in front of me. Not one of my finer moments of sophomore year. I've always thought these pens were pretty cool, just not that morning. Here J- tackles some of the finer points of pen work.

  3. Great idea. Fountain pens in winter Moscow could become a better thing then real fountains in winter..
I like the face you drew.

  4. Mr. Brattcat loves pens of all sorts and still uses, at times, one of these fountain pens. Creative choice for the theme.

  5. I glad you took a different approach to "fountain." I used to have quite a selection of Sheaffer fountain pens in high school. I was particularly fond of the ones that were silver, gold, imitation wood, or with rhinestones on them! EEK!! Whoever J is he's quite an artist. Love that drawing.

  6. Very clever depiction of today's theme. And, a very talented J and the drawing you show! I think many of us in our generation have had a similar fountain pen moment.

  7. I used to love my fountain pens even if they were a bit messy at times! This is a great post for Theme Day.

  8. You are just so clever with your "fountain" for theme day... I love fountain pens still which often present a challenge for this "lefty"

  9. I love a fountain pen. I think they write better than ballpoints. The problem is, I don't do much actual writing anymore. :(

Great choice for the theme day. Your story gave me a little chuckle!

  10. Agree with your other viewers that this is a clever take on the theme! And me, too, like others: love pens of all sorts. I go into an office supply store saying 'No more pens, no more pens,' but I usually come out with a couple new ones to try. . .

  13. This won't work in Italian because fountain pen is stilografica, but I am glad to see that someone else remember a time at school when this kind of pen was the rule. My son refuse to believe this!

  14. I can remember when ball point pens came out and we were not allowed to use them at school - had to stick with our fountain pens. I had a beauty of a Parker pen - loved it but I always seemed to have inky fingers in those days!

  15. Can't live, won't live without a fountain pen. Foutain pens and books are friends for life.

  16. Yes, very creative interpretation. I have had periods when I was a fountainphile, but those phases usually ended when I got tired of living with smeared blue fingers. These days I am a fanatic for Uniball Gel Impact pens, which write as fluidly and boldly as fountain pens, but they don't decorate my fingers against my will.

  17. I also like the interpretation on this theme.

  20. A brilliant take on 'fountains'. I, too had a fountain pen, the first one where you had to dip the nib in a bottle of ink and depress the rubber tube to fill it. The second was the new type with cartridges and I had a similar experience to yours, except the ink squirted all over the maths teachers leg - right down her stocking. All the girls congratulated me, thinking I did it on purpose.
