Free Star
I get a kick out of some ads on the radio. Some just make me wonder, who in their right mind, would take the bait. So, there are definitely bodies out there in their wrong minds for sure. Looking for the ultimate birthday or anniversary gift for a loved one? Why not buy them a star. Whaaaaaaa? You send the the bucks and they'll send you 'your star' complete with a certificate of authenticity. I still say whaaaaaaa? Ok, let me admit something right here and now. Call me a fool or whatever you will, but on clear, star-studded nights in winter and summer, I often find myself staring up towards the Milky Way searching for Stephen, a loved member of our family who we lost in '84. I know he's up there, but I never bought his star. When I think about him and all the great times we had, I smile, and I can be happy in a strange way... But I'd NEVER buy a star. Cripes, they're free for the taking... every night!

I like this original star, and I'd bet your long-ago friend would too!
ReplyDeleteThe star holds up the wall of the building and were once an important part of the structures. Stephen is probably looking down at you and wondering, what you are looking at?
ReplyDeleteI think it was P.T. Barnum who said something about a sucker being born any minute.
ReplyDeleteBut perhaps Honest Abe is on to something.
Re what I shot: 86. But I cheated.
Abraham Lincoln - the older one - said that you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time. He could have had a career in marketing.
ReplyDeleteYou're absolutely right, the best stars are not for sale! They're cultivated, if you know what I mean...
ReplyDeleteGod bless you!

When I was a wee girl I think I bought 1 cubic inch of land in the Yukon...some cereal scam! Well I guess I'll have to keep shopping for your birthday gift Bird! HA

Stars make nice decorations but best are the one in the sky that shine down on us at night. Stephan included. MB
ReplyDeleteAmen...I hate those that try to make money off others that are grieving.
ReplyDeleteI love the rusty, metal star against the red brick! Lovely!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first opened your site today I remembered seeing lots of these old iron stars on brick buildings when I was growing up. I'm glad I saw Abe's comment so that I know why.
ReplyDeleteThat is much more than a star: it is a feast of geometry!
ReplyDeleteIf I want a star, I'll just claim it as my own...no money need be exchanged ;-)
ReplyDeleteThe only stars I've paid for is of the glow in the dark variety that I decorated my ceiling with or sticker stars.
My sister bought me a star. Similar to this one. True; it's on the wall of my living room
ReplyDeleteI love this old star - I've never sen them before! Funny how we look to the stars for our old friends and loved ones.
ReplyDeleteI claim the Johnny Depp star.....
ReplyDeletePerfectly said.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo but I agree with you on buying pixie dust, pet rocks (remember those), and stars! Stephen can have a different star every night... they are his for the taking.
ReplyDeleteBises,
G
I think Abe is correct that this star is integral to the strength of the building. BUT I applaud you for not falling for every advertisement that comes along. I wish more people were like you so that our average personal debt were not so scary!
ReplyDeleteWonderful writings on a boring sunday for me ... at home, raining, raining ...
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the structural stars on old buildings. So unique and I wish modern buildings had such character.
ReplyDeleteNice shot. I agree with you. I am sure there are some out there with multiple names.
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely shot. Today's post is at th same time funny and poignant.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding! Dang we fall for some...well...bs sometimes!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I confess, I was one of THOSE people that actually bought a star. It was a birthday gift for my dear MIL, who, after raising 5 sons, deserved her very own star. My husband and I knew it was a gimmick but we did it anyway, LOL! It came nicely presented and my MIL was delighted...and that's all that really mattered.
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't want to buy a bridge in Brooklyn, haha!
