This is the backside of Chisholm Tomb at Evergreen Cemetery. I've driven by it many times and have even worked on it, but have never taken a good, long look from this angle. This is a stained glass window that depicts the Ascension of Christ. Each year at St. Joseph's Grammar School, we got a brand new catechism to use throughout the year, and along with it we got a holy card to use as a bookmark. The small cards are lithographed pictures illustrating biblical tales and parables. At funerals, they are available to family and friends with the name of the deceased and a small prayer. In school, the nuns told us they were blessed, and that we better take care of them. Have I told you certain nuns could be VERY intimidating to small boys?
Sistah, Sistah, Sistah!

ReplyDeleteIt's a nice window and especially appropriate at a cemetery, I guess. Thanks for explaining about holy cards. The name always sounded funny to me, but now I understand better.
ReplyDeleteLove your story... I didn't go to a parochial school, but most teachers could be intimidating to us when we were small.
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice window. Nuns are a complete mystery to me. I think they are much gentler and kinder now than what some perceived them to be earler. I have friends my age who talk about all the creative punishments inflicted on them by nuns during their years in Catholic elementary schools. Of course I was in public schools where things could get kind of brutal also.
ReplyDeleteAnd to small girls!
ReplyDeleteI attended an Episcopal school and we didn't have nuns, but I have heard stories about them from my cousins. That is a beautiful window.
ReplyDeleteThe Chisholms must have been important people to rate such an elegant tomb!
ReplyDeleteoh, the Catholic traditions. they stay with us forever - just like the guilt. :)
ReplyDeleteAn interesting window. And I love your story today. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful glass and elegant classical columns. The nun experience is foreign to me. My father was kicked out of the Catholic church for marrying my Protestant mother.
ReplyDeleteLovely window! I loved those cards when I was a kid. Still have a bunch.
ReplyDeleteI think it's an elegant tomb indeed!I'm impressed by those columns.

That is a nice backside!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful window and I have to say that I never experienced the wrath of nuns in school. Though I have heard some tales!
