Dandelions
The First Dandelion
Simple and fresh and fair from winter's close emerging,
As if no artifice of fashion, business, politics, had ever been,
Forth from its sunny nook of shelter'd grass--innocent,
golden, calm as the dawn,
The spring's first dandelion shows its trustful face
excerpt from "Leaves of Grass," by Walt Whitman
I do remember lying on our stomachs on a green field covered like this in dandelions seemingly forever. We broke them off as close to the ground as we could, so the stems were long. Then one by one we took turns and flicked the flowers off at each others' faces. It was great fun. Simple times or what.

And we tied or twined them together for necklaces . . . and my grandmother wilted the greens for salads . . .
ReplyDeletep. s. It is hard for my old eyes to read the green-against-black text of the poem . . . You can read it?

ReplyDeleteoh, the humble dandelion. what a glorious diversity of uses we humans find for it.
ReplyDeleteMy sisters and I would make a bouquet and take it home to mom!
ReplyDeleteReminds me of the first time I saw The Wizard of Oz...there was a dandy lion in it!

ReplyDeleteDandelions! We thought if we picked them they would make us wet the bed!
ReplyDeleteI guess I lost the first message! I'll repeat it below and hope I do it right this time.
ReplyDeleteAh, dandelion wine. My father used to make wine before it became fashionable and a hobby. I used to get a thimble-full before bedtime. You've read, I hope, Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury?!
