Poodle skirts, saddle shoes, cat-eye glasses and Elvis. Nothing screamed 50's fashion more than this combination. If you were a girl headed to a local sock hop and you wanted to be in, you were probably sporting one of these poodle skirts. Designed by Julie Lynne Charlot, the appliqued doggie was a must have. Guys, simple back then and now, white or black tee shirt, blue jeans, a pack of ciggies rolled up on your sleeve, sneakers, your hair slicked back and you were ready, willing and able to make your mark. Jailhouse Rock!
Poodle skirts and Dick Clark!
ReplyDeletewell-written :-)
ReplyDeletethis brings back some great memories. you are so good at evoking past times.
ReplyDeleteOh, yeahhhhhh! And puffy, scratchy crinolines beneath the felt poodle skirts. And guys always look great in black or white tee-shirts. Oh, yeahhhh.

Birdman -- In addition to your fads were pink dress shirts worn by many of the boys in my Michigan high school. Also, the cigs rolled up in shirt sleeves were fads of the "greaser guys." Greaser 's greased their hair back and wore it a bit longer than the preppy guys with the pink shirts. Poodle skirts were worn by some but they were in the minority. -- barbara
ReplyDeleteR.I.P. Dick Clark. I never missed a day of American Bandstand in the 50s. This skirt would have been perfect for the show!
ReplyDeleteLet's see...in the 50s I wore Levis and a short-sleeve sport shirt, mostly, with Lucky Strikes in the pocket. And loafers.
ReplyDeleteThen I went into the Navy and wore a uniform.
Now this brings back memories. I was too young to have one when they were in style but I always thought they were so cool.
ReplyDeletePoodle skirt, tucked in sweater, a short scarf around your neck, and saddle shoes. So American Bandstand.
ReplyDeleteAnd lots of net petticoats to go under those skirts! Of course, we lost one of our icons of that time a few days ago - Dick Clark!
