Willard and Cresent beaches in the summer and during the winter the expanse of open water of Old Orchard Beach are places that bring forth solace and creativity into my life. Whether it's the solitude of the empty beach with pounding surf in the winter months or the relatively uncrowded warm sand of July, they can both set the mind at ease and rejuvenate the spirit. Both of these times and locals conjurer up fine memories too- our January trips to icy Kettle Cove in the station wagon and Dad's wild tales of pirates and buried treasures or Mom's egg salad sandwiches with that slight hint of sand at Willard on our summer sojourns there. Now that I think about it, I shouldn't be surprised at all that these sites along the coast bring forth such feelings. The mind does amazing things, when we just sit back and let it work.

  1. I feel the same way about particular beaches, most of them up north. Though not impossible, it can be a bit of a challenge to find secluded beaches here with that solitude you mentioned. (Love the mention about the hint of sand in the sandwiches --haha!)

  2. It's been many years since we took our children to the beach (they are long grown!)...and most of those trips were in Texas. We did, however, once visit a beach in Connecticut that looked much like the one in your photo. Good times for sure!

  3. I think beaches are places of joy and fond memories for people. Such family oriented places they usually are.

  4. I too have some childhood beach memories! Not many because we didn't live that close but, my parents loved to take road trip vacations and many times we went to Florida on these summer trips.

  5. Ah! Memories of summer swimming in the ocean and playing in the sand! You're making me feel homesick for the Atlantic Ocean, Birdman!

  6. Large bodies of water I find soothing at all times of year.
When the waves are wild, I am not so much soothes as awed.

  7. Beautiful memories and a fantastic shot!

  8. Sweet memories to go along with a nice and sunny photo! I can't wait for summer :-)

  9. I agree - there is something about a beach that does it for me too!

  10. Looks like defense cabins from WWII

  11. Egg salad and a little sand. Says it all, and all of it charming.

  12. Beaches are good memories of us growing up ...

  13. Happy Easter to all from

  14. Oh such a lovely beach scene! Wish I could stroll around there barefoot or in sandals!

  15. sirensurf calling and recalling memories of a trip always reminded of around the beginning of school year. Long ago..very long..1963 September, my mum and aunt took me with them during the first week of school to go through New England from here in Ontario. Ended our journey at just this? maybe it was same? spot on Old Orchard Beach in cottages there right at the tide's kiss.
Moonlight and all ...very much fun with my mum and my aunt. Very happy memories...treasures I keep now in my old tired heart. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. I grew up not far from Lake Ontario Kew Beach in Toronto. In winter, that can get kind of chilly and blustery and just the right mix for a stroll to invite contemplation. Thinking back on the waves in Maine and the calming of the sea and the sweet little seabirds there..thank you. It is odd how oblivious I was as a ten year old to all the world's turmoil of the time. I guess that is why that is to me such a lovely time...still, wrapped in innocence of it all.
