Our day began around 2 AM, when
Elenka's water broke. Heading to Maine Medical Center on that early July morning I had two things occupying my mind. Simply put--today would be the birthday of a child, and where was I going to get two chocolate, coconut donuts and a cup of coffee at that time of day. We had practiced the
Lamaze method til it was real old, still had no idea if the baby would be a boy or a girl, had no real finalized list of names, and I had made myself two
tunafish sandwiches to get me through the event. I was prepared, and I knew for sure
Elenka was. We were ready! The day was long and, of course, eventful. It was filled with lots of walking the halls, cherry p
opsicles (for me), and when I ate those sandwiches I have no recollection (but I did). JMR was born at 8:17 PM. Along with marrying
Elenka, the best two days of my life... no question about that. I found this poem on a blog somewhere. It fits today. Happy Birthday Boy!
What is a Boy?
Author: Unknown
He's an imp and an angel,
a dreamer, a tease
An explorer of meadows, and
a climber of trees.
A runner of errands, and
doer of chores.
Who tears his best trousers, and
tracks up your floors.
He's a solemn young man with
some mud on his feet,
And a daredevil riding his
bike down the street.
A bundle of questions, who
wants to know "why",
The world goes around and
the stars fill the sky.
But adventures, timid, excited
or quiet.
There's nothing so new that he,
won't care to try it.
And just when your temper and
patience wear thin,
He'll look up at you with an
innocent grin.
And your heart melts again with
your real pride and joy,
In that mischievous, wonderful
treasure--- your boy!
Happy Birthday, J. Hope it's a fabulous day and year to come!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great photo! Thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteA very happy birthday to JMR! And a happy weekend to you too.
It is always wonderful to know that a child has been born into a loving and nurturing home...that child, a treasure, is gifted in so many ways.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday JMR and may your life always be sweet as those chocolate donuts!
Happy Birthday, JMR! Congrats to Dad, too!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely birthday tribute!
ReplyDeleteVery nice.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful child and touching post. Reminded me of Walter Dean Myers' poem which begins:
ReplyDeleteLove that boy
like a rabbit loves to run
I said I love that boy
like a rabbit loves to run
love to call him in the morning
love to call him
"Hey there, son."
What a sweet little boy! Happy Birthday! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great tribute to your son. Happy Birthday to him and congratulations to you and your wife.
ReplyDeleteAn eventful day indeed. Terrific portrait in B&W!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome picture of J Birdman, hope he has a great birthday.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!!!
ReplyDeleteHave a great one!!
Aw, I love that photo of him.
ReplyDeleteSo what's he doing today? Going on a raft trip down the Saco River with friends, adventurous little imp.
Mom's two lines of the day so far? "Happy Birthday, J" and " make sure you wear sunscreen." A mother's job is NEVER done.
Love you, boy, more than you will ever know.
And thank YOU Birdman.
These sort of memories are the very best we are blessed to have. I have very happy for you three today. And if he's still that blonde, I do hope he heeds his mother and wears the sunscreen.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. It makes me think we should all add personal touches to our daily photo blogs!
ReplyDeleteElenka's Thank you comment to YOU Birdman is priceless! You are loved by your family and blogging community.
Have a great rest of the weekend.
Great shot and love the memory and poem. Can't tell from you profile photo if he looks like you or not . . . hmm.

Bises,
Genie
Thank goodness for the memories we never wish to forget. Its a boy, its a boy, its a boy, oh the joy. Happy Post. Our children's birth hip hooray is all I can say.
ReplyDeleteBon anniversaire !
ReplyDeleteThat is a great poem. As the father of 3 boys I think it is right on the button.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, JMR. Nice post, Bird.
ReplyDeleteWhat I remember most as Susie was preparing her debut into the world was the realization that I was a near-professional about the birth process because of the Lamaze classes but I knew absolutely nothing about what to do with a new baby when we took her home. Cold shivers!
Moving post. I've just been singing 'beautiful boy' the song by John Lennon. I sing it much better than him. :-)
ReplyDeleteBirdman, that is a beautiful memory. Happy Birthday JMR
