In the Zone

The eyes have it. Do you see them peering back at you from these birches? Are you a Twilight Zone fan? Do you remember the episode "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?" One of my favorites . I think the title is taken from that old tag line from the show "To Tell the Truth". You know, 'will the real_____ please stand up?'. I won't bore you with too many of the details, but suffice to say troopers follow footprints from a frozen pond. Inside a diner they find a bus driver, his seven passengers and a soda jerk. The driver is positive there were only six on the bus with him. Is there an alien among them? Who might it be? Martian? Other? What's their purpose here on earth?
Spoiler Alert! At the end, the one rider reveals multiple arms and says he's a Martian, but just before the credits roll, the soda jerk lifts his cap to show his third eye in the middle of his forehead. He's from Venus and has been here a few years, readying for his planet to take over the Earth. Great episode! You can find it on YouTube. It's worth a watch. Here's looking at you, Kid.

  4. I used to love the Twilight Zone. Interesting about the birch trees' eyes, and that was my first thought when I saw the trees.

  7. I see the eyes, Birdman, but sorry, I don't do Twilight Zone. For reasons beyond me, I'm just too sensitive for that kind of stuff. Yeah, that's fearless me speaking! LOL!

[Summers are for hanging out, for sure, except in Manila where any time is for hanging out. It's our rainy season, which comes after hot, hot and hottest. The last is our summer: March-May. :-) ]

  8. PS. Your literary quote is by one of my favorites, Paul Auster.

  9. I used to watch the reruns of that show as a kid. Loved how creepy it was. Our summer is winding down because we go back to school on August 4th. I am already back to work in my classroom. Too early!

  10. The Twilight Zone definitely creeped me out as a kid. I think a strong story and leaving something to the imagination goes a long way over all the special effects and such we have today.

Love your "eyes". They really do look like eyes!

  12. PPS. Start with The Invention of Solitude, a genius piece of prose. Then check out: Leviathan, Book of Illusions, and Moon Palace. I have not seen any of the movies he was associated with: Music of Chances (did read the book), Smoke, or The Inner Life of Martin Frost... there may be others (never could get it together to find the DVDs while in the USA or bother with Amazon.) Enjoy!

  17. Did you see this first? Or did it see you?

  18. That's funny! I only remember one episode of the Twilight Zone where the guy is sitting on an airplane and looks out the window and sees some creature on the wing, but everytime he tells someone about it the creature isn't there. I don't remember how it ends now though.

  19. I remember that one! The creepiest one for me was one where a woman looked at a bus and saw herself sitting there in the window. It totally freaked me for a couple of days!

  20. Let's see. You look at a clump birch tree and that reminds you of Rod Serling and the Twilight Zone. Interesting mind there, Birdman.

  21. I loved The Twilight Zone too! I'll have to go watch that episode now.

  22. Your telling of the tale gave me goose bumps. Just the theme music alone sets me up to be scared. Like the Venetian trees, though.

To answer your question, yes it was warm in there, and loud when fire blew out of wall pipes. Nothing like mini explosions all around to let you know you've entered your own little twilight zone.

  25. In your last comment to me you seemed to have had a buzz on...methinks that is still going! I mean, really! What an imagination ... all that from a few dark blotches on a birch tree!

    You're a funny guy! I think that's why I like you! :-)

  29. Birdman -- the first thing I thought of when I saw your photo was friendship in the form of talking grey haired folks. We all have a different lens within us. -- barbara
