Beach books are in this time of year.
This month the Boston Globe usually runs an entire section of books that just have to be in your beach bag, as you venture off to the seaside. Reading the list always gets me excited... about summer! Sure, I'll make note of a few titles that I should acquire, but that seems to be it. When it comes to book buying, I consider myself an impulse shopper. I'll have a book traveling with me this summer, but what it'll be escapes me right now. When I make my way to a bookstore, there are authors and titles that I readily head towards.
How about you?
How do you make your choices?
Got a good selection for me?
These are not my nails, either.
I choose a book because of the author...or the cover...someone recommended it or gave it to me...or whatever.
ReplyDeleteYou can't miss with Lee Child.
ReplyDeletePerusing book stores is one of life's simple pleasures as far as I'm concerned Birdman.. It can take a while and I hate to be rushed :) as far as what and which author.. depends on what takes my fancy at that particular time :)
ReplyDeleteNice manicure and color on that reader's hand! I am an inveterate book buyer but am training myself to use the library far more since I retired. God and I LOVE libraries. I usually read reviews in the New York Times, esp Sunday's Book Review, and than immediately put myself on the request list at the library. A Half Price bookstore unfortunately for my budget is in close proximity to my house so whether walking or driving, my dear husband and I often stop. . .several times a week just to browse. I head for the bargain basement while he peruses the Mystery Section. God and I love books, too!
ReplyDeleteis that heidi reading there?
ReplyDeleteIn my dreams, maybe....
DeleteI think I'm pretty much an impulse book buyer too. I do have some favorite authors like Douglas Adams. I've read everything he wrote. I do miss him. Recently I read one of JK Rowling's adult books that I enjoyed very much. I might be looking for another one.
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of Lee Child books lined up.
ReplyDeleteI like to think about summer too. I do love books too. I like a certain genre and I like a certain font. Too big--the books no good. I could go on but I have found pretty interesting books using my method. I could say the other way too but I won't.
ReplyDeleteYou could change your polish--haha MB
I tend to skip over women writers. I know I shouldn't say that but in general I find male writers much more to my liking. My favorite writer is a woman but most other women do not write like her. I also look at the covers for books that have won awards and then I sit down with several and read the first page and if it doesn't grab me right off I don't buy it. I love it when I'm in a bookstore and don't want to put a book down--a rare occasion with today's new books.
ReplyDeleteI scout the NY Times BR, LA BR, and NY'r for possibilities. Sometimes take the word of a friend. And then I'll go to the library or book store and read the first page. Then if I like that, I read the second and the third. It doesn't have engage me, necessarily, but I do have to feel some respect for how the words are falling. I usually have six books going at one time and finish about 20 percent of them.
ReplyDeleteI like spy thrillers, myself. I just finished Jack Higgins' latest- though his work has slipped the last few novels. I'd recommend Daniel Silva's series of books on the Israeli spy Gabriel Allon.
ReplyDeleteI like variety, so I walk the aisles of a bookstore and pick out ones that might work, and I pick out some I see on Amazon or in book reviews. They are in stacks on a coffee table. When I finish one, I look over the stack and pick out the next. There have been some Jo Nesbo police books recently, but now I am reading a book about Edison's impact on society through electric light bulbs and the grid.
ReplyDeleteNice shot.
ReplyDeleteI'm very relieved to hear it--that those are NOT your nails. :-)
ReplyDeleteI go by recommendations, favorite past authors, etc . . . I also like to go back to the classics once in a while . . . A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, East of Eden, and so on. Suggestion for you? Yes. Maybe Next Year by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Baseball and growing up in the fifties - both of high interest for you, right?
ReplyDeletePerhaps you'd like The Storied Life of AJ Fikry because of the fun book themes. I wasn't thrilled, but liked the characters & the books.. Browsing book stores: ME Coast Book Shop, Damariscotta, Letterpress Books, Auburn St., Barnes & Noble, Augusta, Book Review, Falmouth. I love those independent bookstore magazines & librarian recommendations. Just finished a J Historical fiction: Mr. Orange. I think you'd like it, reminds me of some of your reminiscences, your paper route for example. And one of the characters is Piet Mondrian.
