Lip Lock

What's it really all about Alfie?

Awhile back Elenka passed the word to me that she wanted to locate one of our unused locks, hang it on one of the locations around the city and profess 'life long love'. I guess that's the point of these walls of locks. Say, " I love you" and lock your love. I think I explained to her at the time that in my mind it was 'the destroying of a perfectly good lock'. I think I recall her rolling her eyes. This fence runs about 20 feet or so right near the water on Commercial Street. To the right is fencing that's just chock full of colored locks of all shapes and sizes. I haven't heard her mention anything about this phenomenon in a couple of years, so maybe the 'fever' has subsided. Perhaps my suggestion: 'take two aspirin and call me in the morning' worked.
And what's more, there are whispers.
Yes, it's true.
Shhhhhhh.
Hush. Hush.
An undertone, if you will.
Gossip around the watercooler at city hall.
Eyesore.
That the city fathers might be thinking of removing the fence completely.
Locks and all.
Gulp!
How should I break this news to my sweet friend?
Lip lock.

  1. You know, I dont' think this fad has hit Tulsa yet. It probably will in about three or four years. We have lots of abandoned fences around town, maybe I will see if I can kickstart a fence.

  2. After it became a fad, I was no longer interested. I liked it when it was obsure. I have a lock, all set to go....I'm thinking of finding a lone place, with no other locks in sight, to fasten ours........or not! ;-p

  3. In Paris , a bridge was broken because of too much locks , becoming too heavy..To lock love is like to try to put it in a cage ! Brrrrr..

  4. I'm not much on fads. I'll have to skip this one.

  5. I'm thinking the two of you are pretty locked in love without any symbols!

  6. That was a catchy title Birdman :) Yeh those love locks are so over now, ditto what Sharon said above!

  7. Funny title, this fad has subsided here, but it is still raging in larger cities like Rome and Florence...

  8. i'm not a fan of these things if they're on a structure that could collapse. :)

  9. last winter we took a walk where this had just started...i think i saw like 3 locks...i will have to go back and see if it took off

  10. The bridge in Paris was a sad story, but, in general, I like a symbolic gesture. And you really can't make a chain link fence look worse than it already does.

  11. Birdman, seems your Mr. Spock-ike rationality will get you into trouble. Be a romantic and go along with Elenka. Yes, the locks are a kind of pollution, and an eyesore, but so what? As my son says, "Just smile and nod."

  12. Every time I see them I feel sick now. The bridgeS in Paris (not just one) are still a sorry sight and I absolutely hate the people who continue to do this (and throw the keys in the river below). There, I've said it. Now if you like, you can sign the petition here: https://www.change.org/p/anne-hidalgo-ban-love-locks-in-paris-now-save-our-historic-sites
    Thanks for us!

  13. It sounded romantic when I first heard about it in Paris. Then I got there and saw guys sitting around selling locks. Commercialized. Then I heard it's become a thing. I think I prefer sweet little private gestures. You know, kind of the "just the two of us" sort of thing. Isn't that what it's about??

  14. It's been done on one of the bridges here. Given what's happened in Paris, it's turned me against the practice.

  15. The city fathers are all Bah Hambug! If they remove this fence, and the desire for the locks persists, won't people just find another place?
I like the idea, but it did get out of hand.

  16. I'm glad you didn't do it because it is an eyesore and I agree with Ciel. When I was in Paris last summer, I was appalled to see the damage done by these locks to those beautiful bridges. I even saw them attached at the top of the Eiffel Tower! I have already signed the petition to ban these horrible things. OK I'm done ranting now.

  17. I saw them in Paris too and was appalled at what they had done to the bridges.

  18. Birdman, go get that lock and put it on the handle of your favorite coffee mug and tell her that you want to be reminded of your love for her every day, several times a day. At least you won't destroy a perfectly good fence or bridge.

  19. This is a wacko custom. I had never seen it in STL, or anywhere in the US, for that matter, but I've photographed it in a few places in Europe. There is a bridge in Paris where the locks add so much weight they are causing structural damage to it. The "lock" part of it is creepy and the forever theme is, well, a bit foolish. So humbug.

  20. hmmmmm...seems like most comments here are not really for this lock thing. i think it's pretty cool. and i'm definitely not a 'fad' follower. it's just the idea of it...love locks. each lock has meaning. a display of their love. all the different locks, the colors.
i wonder if a couple 'fall out of love'...do they go back & remove their lock??!
    'go for it'
    anyway....save the fence!! :)
    i like this shot!
