Books#5

Can you really go wrong with books? Whether it's a large library, with historical volumes under lock and key or a small quaint bookstore, with tucked away alcoves for quiet reading time, these are both all time favorite hangouts of mine. Add in all the electronics and wifi that have found their way into libraries today, and you'd have to say, they do have a somewhat different look to them in 2011. However, you can always find a spot for some quiet time though. This is the Portland Room at the Portland Public Library. It contains some the oldest and most valuable volumes in the library's collection. This room is warm, inviting and just the spot to spend 'me time' in on a blustery spring afternoon.

  7. It's a classic library photo. The wood table and chairs give it a welcoming warmth.

  8. I'd love to look at those old books and see what they have. When I was in Washington D.C. last December, I visited the Library of Congress and got to see the Thomas Jefferson collection of books. What a treat.

  9. Not sure why but there is something very soothing about being surrounded by books! Not the same being surrounded by Kindles.

  10. Personally I find books very comforting. My brother-in-law, on the other hand, cannot understand why my husband and I have so many books. Well, maybe we DO need to cull a few. Maybe. :)

  12. Times have changed dramatically for libraries and readers. (There are still a few readers.) I used to hang out in the library a lot when I was a kid. Now I can't remember the last time I was in one. Still read books but almost always on an iPad, which I actually prefer to the paper kind. Many people differ.

  13. Gee, I like browsing in bookstores, but I'm really not a library kind of guy. Yes, it is silly buying books to read just once, but it is the rhythm I have fallen into . . .

  14. Don't you like the special smell of old books? and the feeling when you touch the old paper, and the cover?and the idea that so many people before you hold the book, read it , learn from it? and the idea that the book had such a long life, much longer than yours, and is still there, and will bring joy to many more people after you?...
