Just Moo

Hook 'Em Horns!
Ok, this is not a longhorn steer, but it will have to do. The latest news from this corner of my world is that Justin and Yelena have pulled up stakes and moved to Austin, Texas. Let me take a breath. Yelena has a friend in Austin, who she visited a few years ago and fell in love with the city. Justin and Yelena are in love, so I guess the move was the next logical step for them. For two Maine homebodies like Elenka and I, it's hard to find the logic, but we know regrets down the road can be hard to manage. What do they say, 'fish gotta swim; birds gotta fly'. They've settled into a beautiful apartment complex northwest of the city and seem so very happy together. Thanks to 'facetime' we have been able to keep track of their comings and goings, but of course it's not the same. Justin, when he makes a move, likes the 'big' step. For example, he headed off to IU for college (22 hours away), but we always knew he'd be returning. This time it seems a bit more long term... and so far away.
But for us, if it's what he truly wants, it's what we want for him.
Does this makes any sense?
I'm sure many of you have faced this same dilemma with kids.
Now, is this a steer?
A bull?
A cow?
Today, it'll have to suffice for a U of Texas longhorn.

  1. If you remember, Birdman, I did the same thing....all by myself, albeit, only from 6 1/2 hours away, but I am 'from away' as they say...
    Best move I made! <3

  2. This is your and Elenka's golden opportunity to spend the months of January and February in Austin. That's the perfect time of year to be in south Texas and away from Maine. This will give you a whole new world to explore.

  4. I see a trip to Texas in your future. Austin is a very pretty city. I used to travel there once a year for a conference. It's an easy place to like.

  9. We are still quite grouped around here, with some rare exceptions. Good luck to the kids!

  11. Yep, kids do have their own lives to live. I think it's wrong to make them feel guilty about that. You sound like a wise parent.

  12. Maybe just a bad dream - not the best looking bovine. Both of my kids went to college in Chicago. One stayed. Not nearly such a long distance tho.

  16. It's not a moose this I know. Lovely, that you are letting your young one fly away...Is Justin's lady friend's name similiar to Elenka's name?

  17. They will love Austin. Perfect place for young professionals. I was through Austin last week. Didn't stop but it took over an hour just to get through a small portion of the city on an Interstate highway. Of course, I arrived there about 4:00 so rush-hour traffic was not quite as its peak.

As for the bovine, surely you know you can't answer your question by just looking at the head! If I were you, I wouldn't be asking things like that when you get to Texas!

  20. Austin is a fabulous city. They will love it there, and you will learn to love it, too, when you visit. FaceTime (or in my case, Skype and WhatsApp) are essentials for distant kids. Try Johannesburg, where my daughter Susie lives with her husband and new baby.
