Shopping Trip

Well, if you are shopping for groceries in the Portland, like most cities and towns, you have quite a few choices. Mom and Pop stores can still be found in just about every neighborhood. And sure places, like Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, are always lurking about. But for us die hard residents, it pretty much comes down to Shaw's Supermarkets or Hannaford's Supermarkets. From my non-statistical research, I'd say that you are either a Shaw's or a Hannaford's devotee. Most people do not crossover , back in forth. Enter Elenka. She is one frugal shopper. If there's a special sale on some item, especially meats, she has no shame. She's doing a crossover, and I'm not talking about any tricky dribbling display with a basketball. Me? I really don't mind shopping at all, but please, just get me that list and let me run the aisles.
I stick to Hannaford's.
I know my way around most of their stores.
Sometimes though, I can be thrown a curveball.
For example, milled flaxseed?

  1. Good to support local supermarkets, altho I must admit I like Trader Joe's.

  2. I guess you could call me a cross-over kind of girl. I shop at them all it just depends on what I'm looking for. Safeway is the closest and AJ's has the best meat and fish and Whole Foods and Trader Joe's have all those interesting things that we like to try along the way.

  3. I have three places I shop: Aldi, Rewe and Edeka. I have no qualms about crossing over.

  4. I cross over all the time - looking for the bargains like Elenka does!

  5. I like to look for bargains like Elenka but I do admit liking a store best when I know where to find things quickly.

  6. If I still lived there, I would LOVE to shop a lot at Whole Foods. So, Hannaford it is, supplemented by the Belfast Co-op. Wish I could be organized like Elenka to always take advantage of the specials. It's a good subject, a lot of daily life is about this, verses just landmarks.

  7. We have the odd Whole Foods here, but generally the larger chains are around six stores. I tend to frequent the Metro grocery stores.

  8. Oh, it's the curveballs that can make a simple shopping trip into a saga. Who knew a typical supermarket could have cheese in two or three different places?

  9. My favorite shopping places are the smaller supermarkets...

  10. Hmm, did you read where Whole Foods laid off 1500 workers today?

  11. I would love to be a local shop girl, but they are more expensive than the mall.

  12. Same here: we have Schnucks and Dierbergs. They have relative strengths and weaknesses. Schnucks is by far the closer so that's where I go.

Shopped in the Hannaford's in Camden many times. Nice store.

  14. In Florida Publix is ubiquitous and terrific, so I rarely venture into Whole Foods. In West Hartford, there are several places, but none are terrific, so I am a bit more promiscuous, mainly Big Y, sometimes Stop & Shop or Whole Foods.
