There are times when you can see the writing on the wall, and days that it's anything but clear. Want to take a stab at what we're looking at here? Can you hear the Jeopardy theme playing in the background? If your answer was: "What is a old gravestone, Alex?" You are a winner!
Most of the grave sites in this cemetery are hard to read, as most are pre-1700s. This one looks to be some sort of dark sandstone. Over the years, this type of marker doesn't take the elements well.
It was found at the Charter Street Burial Ground, known historically as the Olde Burying Point in Salem Massachusetts. It is the second oldest burial ground in the United States.
*This photograph was taken last week, on a visit to the town pre-Halloween.
I like a lot the texture and lines, playing with our imagination. I even see animal shapes there!Very cool!

I maxed the photo and got a very clear picture of the weathered stone, which is really quite attractive!
ReplyDeleteit sure has some pretty textures, though.
ReplyDeleteAn old cemetery in that town has to be interesting.
ReplyDeleteSo interesting. Pre 1700s hard to imagine. Out here early grave markers all mostly mid to late 1800s. It took a long time to get here. Neat stone. MB
ReplyDeleteWhat history this burial grounds holds. I bet you have a cemetery association connected with this place given its age and importance. -- barbara
ReplyDeleteLike others, I appreciate the textures and colors here, but presenting the photo on its side adds another layer of difficulty "reading" the picture. A pre 1700 cemetery is amazingly old for the U.S. It should draw everyone with a touch of historian in them.
ReplyDeleteSuch beauty in the colors and textures here.
ReplyDeleteSalem! That is my old stomping ground. Glad you told me what it is . I was stumped.
ReplyDeleteOkay, now you got that tune stuck in my head. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI would not have guessed correctly. In fact. I couldn't have guessed at all. Nice shot.
