November Sun

Early November brings cool mornings and bright sun to the living room windows. They are good mornings and afternoons to move wood, and that's just what I'm doing. I'm making my way through 2 cords. I'm stacking it out back in the woodshed and quite enjoying the chore. Every fall, I do. Don't we all have some mundane activity that we wonder why we enjoy doing it. I think it all started for me when that big maple next to the garage got damaged in a storm and Dad had it cut down. Dad, my brother and I cut it up with a two-man saw, then split it up with an ax and some steel wedges. Then the pile of wood was my brother's and mine to stack.
I think it all began then-- my love of stacking.
Do you have a seemingly boring activity that you love and can't explain?
Please share.
I need something to read today.
The Patriots are on a bye week.

  1. I share your love of chopping and stacking wood. There must be something of the primeval in it that connects us with generations and ages past.
I grew up an apartment in the big city (Chicago) with no father at home, so I lack the treasured childhood memories you describe here. Only at age 50 was I free to start a life of full-time outdoor physical work--archaeology, Heifer Ranch, monastery farm.
Work inside the house is no fun for me, but any work done outdoors is great.
    Have fun out there, Birdman!

  2. I enjoy the way the light filters through your window curtains. I also enjoy and can visualize and smell the wood as it was being cut. I have always loved hanging laundry outdoors, especially on a sunny day with a bit of a breeze. The smell of the clothes and the sound of them being snapped ever so gently by the wind is beyond pleasant.

  3. I enjoy trimming my hedges to perfection just for the satisfaction of seeing every leaf in place :)

  4. I like to iron. Don't know why, but I always have. Like to have my clothes (and that other person who lives in the house) ready for the week. However, I do not have any scars on my person from an iron. . . just sayin' . . .

    2. It's in the shape of a small triangle. I think my real downfall was 'hitting' the steam button. hothothothothot!
Hey, it was done in a non-thinking moment early in the AM. I must say though. It is quite conversation point with the ladies.
      They do like to iron!

  5. we helped my father make wood each summer and throw it down into the basement to be stacked there for the wood stove.

my mundane task that i love is mowing yard on my riding mower. takes about 2 hours to do the entire yard (not counting push mowing areas) but i love it. it is freeing and therapeutic.

  6. I like to vacuum. Maybe it is the satisfaction of sucking up all the dog hair.

  7. First, I feel your pain, both of my teams have a bye week: Patriots and Ohio State Buckeyes. I don't know what to do with myself. Maybe I will clean the fridge. That is the mundane task I love, having the cheese in the cheese drawer, pickles and condiments in the door and everything organized. I may be a terrible cook but my fridge looks damn good.

  9. I like ironing. it's boring and takes a lot of time , but meanwhile, I'm on my own, I can think and dream, my hands act and my mind is miles away, in other places .

  10. Like Annie and Malyss, I like ironing: that rhythmic motion and the heat = hypnotic, tranquillizing, soothing. . . And altho I don't like to stack wood, I appreciate a well-stacked pile. Seeing lots of those up here in Maine now . . .

  12. I like tearing off the address/name/identification parts of JUNK mail and then shredding them. I figure its worth it not to shred the entire piece of JUNK mail because it saves wear and tear on the shredder. Love your November sun photo!

  13. I haven't stacked wood in years, since I stopped using my fireplace. But, let's hear more about trying to iron your shirt while you were wearing it!!!

  14. The picture is simple but has a lovely glow.

My compulsive, satisfying activity? I take pictures and more pictures. Probably not a week goes by that I don't take a hundred. If we're traveling or there a few events in town I can take a thousand. It's a compulsion.

  15. When I was at my father-in-law's house I gladly did my chopping, but he used to say that I wasn't so good at stacking... He was probably right!
