Dig 2014

Can you dig the close to ending 2014?
Was it all you hoped for?
Did those things you wished for in January past come to fruition?
Did you accomplish all you set out to do?
What did you gain?
What did you lose?
Well, Portland gained one new rag and lost another.
The Portland Daily Sun, a free daily paper, bit the dust after just a few years existence. Most of the writers got gobbled up by their sister paper The Portland Phoenix, a weekly that has outlasted other of its ilk in New England. Boston and Providence come to mind. Dig Portland is the newest 'weekly baby' to hit the streets of the city in these bright red carriers. Apparently its Boston publisher feels that P-town is still ripe for a free weekly to survive and flourish. I must admit, at this point, that I do grab a copy on a pretty regular basis. It keeps me up on the nighty comings and goings about the city.
Does your city or town have these?
Do you pick them up?
Helpful to you?
Your year---
Successes? Regrets?
I'm sure we all had a few of each.
Bye-bye 2014!
Can ya dig it?

  1. When I was working on those Y2K projects all those years ago, 2015 seemed a long, long way off. But, here we are, marching forward.

  3. We've got a weekly too and it is weak. A piece of crap, to put it nicely! I scan it quickly before tossing it.

And I really don't want a review of 2014...I remember the stories, didn't like 'em the first time and don't want to read about them or see them again! So there, too! Happy New Year! :)

  4. We have a daily freebie here, Metro. I don't pick them up... I buy a couple of papers a day and read three more. We do have a rag called the Sun up here... a right wing amateur pile of seething temper tantrum columnists with editors who cater to people who can't understand words of more than two syllables.

  5. Not really a good year around here, both locally and as a country. Let's hope for something better next year...

  7. We have 3 daily papers, i free daily, and 1 weekly freebie that has been around forever. There was another weekly freebie but it folded and was owned by one of the big dailies so the writers just went to the mothership. There are also a lot of neighbouhood/community papers around the city too. I love reading a newspaper even when I'm travelling.

  9. I saw 2 Portland magazines, all slick, (not free) at a bookstore down there last visit...My old Portland, back in the day, was not so slick...We have The Free Press up here, great weekly paper (not slick), great events listings & good articles) & there are several others in Mid-coast. I do enjoy the PPH when I'm down there...

  10. I still haven't moved into my apartment and I don't have a job yet, so 2014 wasn't all that I hoped for... but I'm sure 2015 will bring me what I want and need! :)

  12. Ah, "Can you dig it?" A questions right out of the 1960s. Sure I dig it. This year was a good one, and I have great hopes for 2015. Hope your 2015 is also good.

  13. No freebies; two locals, one with very scant coverage of the world beyond the local. The one paper I read in California which was on a downward trajectory looks like an encyclopedia of newspaperism compared to here. But I do learn about local haps and I'm grateful to have it.

  14. We have one newspaper in this small town. And, God Bless It, the thing is like a repeat performance each week.

  15. The line between newspapers and tabloids have faded hence no longer exciting to browse except for yielding to old habits.

  16. For me it was a horrible year. Well at least the last half of it. Next year will be a time for me to pick up the pieces and move forward.

  17. We had a free paper paper for some years, but it was only advertising and inserts from some very peculiar people, so it went bust. Now we have two dailies. A Happy New Year to you!

PS Most important event? One of our daughter got twins!

  18. There are several local papers and magazines in Hartford and Naples. Hartford's are doing marginally OK but Naples' are thriving. Nothing like an older population to keep paper papers in business. My 2014 was fine and I expect 2015 to be also fine, including first grandchild in May. Yes, I am a lucky guy.
